About University of New England

The University of New England is a private university with its historic campus in Biddeford, Maine, and a health-professions campus in Portland. It grew from Westbrook Seminary (1831) and St. Francis College; the present university was formed in 1978. It is a specialist health-sciences and marine-science institution rather than a large comprehensive research university.

Colleges cover osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine, health professions, arts and sciences, and marine and environmental programs. The College of Osteopathic Medicine is a large D.O. school. The Marine Science Center on the Biddeford shore supports coastal and ocean research. Portland houses much of the clinical teaching for pharmacy, dental medicine, and other health professions.

Enrollment is about 7,000 students, with a high share in graduate and professional health programs and a smaller international group. Faculty are concentrated in clinical and marine fields. Alumni work as osteopathic physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, and marine scientists.

Graduate study is known for the D.O., Pharm.D., D.P.T., physician-assistant, and related professional master's degrees, with clinical coursework and rotations in New England hospitals. Supervision mixes classroom instruction with clinical preceptors. The academic year follows U.S. semesters. Biddeford students live on a coastal campus at the mouth of the Saco River; many health students train in Portland.
