About University of New Hampshire

The University of New Hampshire is the state's public land-grant flagship, with its main campus in Durham. It was founded in 1866 in Hanover as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts, moved to Durham in 1893, and took the university name in 1923. It is a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant institution whose mission still joins agriculture, engineering, and ocean and space science.

Graduate work is housed in the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, the College of Health and Human Services, the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, and the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law in Concord. Research strengths include oceanography, space physics, and environmental science, organized through the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space and the Space Science Center.

Enrollment is about 15,000, including roughly 2,500 graduate students. International enrollment is smaller than at many coastal research universities, though graduate laboratories recruit globally. Alumni include novelist John Irving, who studied at Durham, and former U.S. senator Jeanne Shaheen, who earned a master's at the university.

Graduate degrees include the PhD, MS, MEd, MBA, and the JD at the Concord law school. Science doctorates are laboratory-supervised; education and business are coursework-heavy. The calendar is the semester. Assistantships and grant support are standard in the sciences. Durham is a small college town; Boston and the New Hampshire seacoast are within an hour.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of New Hampshire lists 114 graduate programs across 32 subjects: 79 master's programs and 32 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, biology and health & medical sciences.
