About University of Oklahoma
The University of Oklahoma is Oklahoma's public flagship research university, founded in 1890 in Norman, two years after the Land Run opened the Unassigned Lands. It grew with the state, adding a Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City and a campus in Tulsa. The Norman campus is a large brick precinct south of Oklahoma City, with the National Weather Center as a defining scientific facility.
Colleges include the College of Arts and Sciences, the Gallogly College of Engineering, the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy, the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, the Price College of Business, the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, the College of Law, the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education, and fine arts. Meteorology, petroleum and geological engineering, Native American studies, and journalism are the fields most associated with graduate work. The National Weather Center and the OU Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City are the laboratories and hospitals graduate students use.
Enrollment on the Norman campus is about 28,000, with several thousand additional students in Oklahoma City health programs. Graduate and professional students number more than 6,000. International students are a visible share, especially in engineering and the geosciences, and come from more than 100 countries. Alumni include astronaut Shannon Lucid, actor James Garner, and former House Speaker Carl Albert.
Graduate degrees include the PhD, professional master's, JD, and health-science doctorates based in Oklahoma City. Meteorology and earth-energy doctorates are research-group based and often tied to federal weather and energy laboratories. The calendar is two semesters. Assistantships and sponsored research support many PhD students. Norman is a college town immediately south of Oklahoma City; medical graduate students live and train in the capital.
