About University of Rhode Island
The University of Rhode Island is Rhode Island's public land-grant and sea-grant university, with its main campus in Kingston. It opened in 1892 as the Rhode Island College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. It later added a Narragansett Bay Campus for oceanography and a Feinstein Providence Campus for urban and professional programs.
Colleges include Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, Environment and Life Sciences, Health Sciences, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Education, together with the Graduate School of Oceanography. The Graduate School of Oceanography at Narragansett, the College of Pharmacy, and coastal research laboratories define the research profile. Oceanography, marine affairs, pharmacy, and engineering are the fields most associated with graduate study here.
Enrollment is about 17,000, including roughly 2,500 graduate students. International students are a modest share, on the order of 5 to 10 percent, from several dozen countries. Faculty number about 800. Alumni include journalist Christiane Amanpour and filmmaker Peter Farrelly.
Doctoral work is established in oceanography, pharmacy, and engineering, with master's degrees across the colleges. Study follows a U.S. departmental model of coursework and a thesis or dissertation on a two-semester calendar. Research assistantships support many oceanography and science doctorates. Oceanography students spend much of their time at Narragansett Bay; others remain in Kingston, a small college town in southern Rhode Island near the coast.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Rhode Island lists 4 graduate programs across 4 subjects: 1 master's program and 3 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in computer science, earth & environmental sciences and psychology.
