About University of San Francisco
The University of San Francisco is a private Jesuit university in San Francisco, California. It was founded in 1855 as St. Ignatius Academy and is the city's oldest institution of higher education. The main campus occupies a hilltop site at Lone Mountain, with additional facilities for law and other professional programs in the city. Its defining fact is the Jesuit Catholic mission combined with professional schools in a dense urban setting.
Academic work is organized through the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Management, the School of Nursing and Health Professions, the School of Education, and the School of Law. Graduate students also use clinical and community sites across the Bay Area. Business, nursing, education, public health, and law are the fields most associated with the university at graduate level.
Enrollment is about 10,000, with graduate and professional students making up a large share. International students are a substantial minority, drawn from Asia, Latin America, and Europe among other regions. Alumni include journalist Pierre Salinger, Intel chief executive Paul Otellini, and businessman Gordon Getty.
Graduate study is known for professional master's degrees, the JD, and a smaller set of doctoral programs in education and related fields. Coursework, clinics, and internships carry more weight than a pure tutorial model. The calendar follows U.S. semesters. Jesuit and university scholarships, assistantships, and professional fellowships support part of the graduate body. Students study on a compact hilltop campus with immediate access to San Francisco transit and employers.
