About University of Texas at El paso
The University of Texas at El Paso is a public research university in El Paso, Texas, on the U.S.–Mexico border. It opened in 1913 as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, later operated as Texas Western College, and took its present name in the University of Texas System in 1967. After a 1916 fire, campus buildings were rebuilt in a Bhutanese dzong style on a hillside above the Rio Grande.
Colleges include engineering, liberal arts, science, business administration, education, health sciences, nursing, and pharmacy, plus a graduate school. Border health, environmental science, engineering, and bilingual education are central. The Border Biomedical Research Center and engineering laboratories serve graduate research, and the original mining mission continues in metallurgical and geological work.
Enrollment is about 24,000 students. A large majority are Hispanic, and the university draws commuters from Ciudad Juárez as well as El Paso County. Graduate enrollment is several thousand. Faculty number several hundred. Alumni are concentrated in border engineering, education, and public service.
Graduate study includes master’s and doctoral degrees, with engineering, biological sciences, and education among the larger research areas. Programs combine semester coursework with thesis or dissertation supervision. Students live in El Paso or commute from Juárez; daily campus life is bilingual and binational, against the Franklin Mountains and the desert border.
