About Utah State University
Utah State University is the land-grant university of Utah, founded in 1888 in Logan as the Agricultural College of Utah. It grew from a teacher-and-farm college in Cache Valley into a statewide system with the Logan campus as its research core, plus regional campuses and a distance network. Its defining mission remains agriculture, natural resources, extension, and applied science under the Morrill Act.
Academic work is grouped in colleges of agriculture and applied sciences, engineering, science, natural resources (the Quinney College), education and human services, humanities and social sciences, business, and a School of Veterinary Medicine. Graduate students are drawn to space science and engineering through the Space Dynamics Laboratory, to water and ecology through the Utah Water Research Laboratory and the Ecology Center, and to education research in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services.
Enrollment is about 27,000 students, including several thousand graduate students; international enrollment is a modest share, with students from dozens of countries. Faculty number more than 1,000. Alumni include Pro Football Hall of Famer Merlin Olsen and NASA astronaut Mary L. Cleave, along with extension agents and engineers across the Intermountain West.
Graduate study includes research master's and PhDs, plus professional degrees in education, business, and landscape architecture, on a semester calendar. Research assistantships are common in engineering, agriculture, and space instrumentation, and the university also awards graduate fellowships. Logan sits in a high valley between the Wellsville Mountains and the Bear River Range, so graduate life is small-city and outdoor, with Salt Lake City about 80 miles south.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Utah State University lists 2 graduate programs in computer science and health & medical sciences, all of them doctoral programs.
