About Vermont Law School

Vermont Law School, now operating as Vermont Law and Graduate School, is an independent law and graduate school in South Royalton, Vermont. It was founded in 1972. It is not part of the University of Vermont; it is a free-standing professional school on a small campus along the White River in a village setting.

The school is known for environmental law, energy law, and related public-policy programs. It offers the JD, the Master of Environmental Law and Policy, LL.M. degrees in environmental and American law, and master's work in energy regulation and food and agriculture law. Clinics and centers focus on environmental advocacy, energy, and animal law.

Enrollment is about 500 to 700 students, almost all graduate and professional. International students are a minority, often in the LL.M. and master's programs. Faculty number on the order of 50 to 80. Alumni work in environmental agencies, nonprofits, and law firms; the school does not have a roster of household-name public figures on the scale of older law schools.

The JD is a three-year professional degree; master's programs are one-year taught courses with a policy or regulatory emphasis. Summers include environmental-law institutes. Funding is mainly scholarships and loans rather than lab stipends. South Royalton is a small village; students live locally or in nearby towns and work in a rural New England setting rather than a downtown legal market.
