About Virginia Institute of Marine Science
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science is the graduate marine laboratory of the College of William & Mary. It opened in 1940 as the Virginia Fisheries Laboratory at Gloucester Point on the York River, near the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, and took its present name in 1962. Its statutory mission combines graduate education with advisory service to the Commonwealth on fisheries, storms, and coastal water quality.
Academic work sits in the School of Marine Science. Research groups cover fisheries science, coastal and ocean processes, marine chemistry, aquaculture, and ecosystem health. Field sites include the main Gloucester Point campus and the Eastern Shore Laboratory at Wachapreague. Students use research vessels and long-term monitoring programs on the Bay.
The institute is small: on the order of 50 faculty scientists and about 80 to 100 graduate students, plus research staff. The student body is mostly from the United States, with a smaller international group. Alumni work in NOAA, state marine agencies, and academic oceanography.
Degrees are the M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. in marine science awarded by William & Mary. Study is research-heavy, with a committee and a thesis or dissertation rather than a large taught-course load. Gloucester Point is a working waterfront town across the river from Yorktown; students split time among lab, field, and Williamsburg for some university services.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Virginia Institute of Marine Science lists 1 master's program, in earth & environmental sciences.
