About Wayne State University

Wayne State University is a public research university in Midtown Detroit, Michigan. It traces to the Detroit Medical College of 1868 and a municipal teachers college, which merged into Wayne University and took the Wayne State name in 1956. Its defining fact is an urban research campus organized around a large School of Medicine and professional colleges in the city's cultural center.

Schools and colleges include medicine, law, engineering, liberal arts and sciences, business, education, social work, pharmacy and health sciences, nursing, fine, performing and communication arts, and information sciences. Graduate work is concentrated in medicine, biomedical science, law, social work, and engineering. The campus adjoins the Detroit Medical Center.

About 24,000 students enroll, with a large graduate and professional share. Students come from Michigan, other U.S. states, and many countries. Faculty number more than 2,000 when clinical appointments are counted. Alumni include journalist Helen Thomas, comedian Lily Tomlin, and broadcaster Casey Kasem.

The university awards master's, professional, and doctoral degrees, including the MD and JD. Doctoral science follows a laboratory or dissertation model; professional schools use coursework and clinical or legal practice. The calendar is a fall-spring semester. Assistantships and hospital appointments support many graduate students. Midtown Detroit places labs, libraries, and housing inside the city's museum and medical district.
