About West Virginia University

West Virginia University is the state's flagship land-grant and research university, founded in 1867 in Morgantown. It developed from a small college at the confluence of the Monongahela River and Deckers Creek into a statewide system with the main campus, law school, and Health Sciences Center concentrated in Morgantown. Its mission combines classical land-grant teaching with energy, health, and Appalachian studies.

Colleges include arts and sciences, engineering and mineral resources, agriculture and natural resources, business and economics, creative arts, education, law, and a Health Sciences Center with schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and public health. Research strengths include energy and fossil resources, forensics, neuroscience, and rural health. Graduate students work at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, the Energy Institute, and forensic science laboratories.

Enrollment is about 24,000 students, with graduate and professional students a substantial share because of medicine, law, and engineering. International students come from many countries but are a limited percentage of the total. Faculty number more than 2,000. Alumni include basketball Hall of Famer Jerry West, actor Don Knotts, and NASA astronaut Jon A. McBride.

Graduate study includes PhDs, MD and other health doctorates, the JD, and research and professional master's degrees on a semester calendar. Assistantships and health-sciences residencies are the main support, with fellowships in energy and STEM. Morgantown is a steep river city: a personal rapid transit system links campuses, downtown is dense with student housing, and hills make winter commuting part of graduate life.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, West Virginia University lists 2 graduate programs in communication, media & journalism and computer science, all of them doctoral programs.
