About Williams College
Williams College is a private liberal arts college in Williamstown, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1793 with a bequest from Colonel Ephraim Williams and has remained a small undergraduate college in the Berkshires. Its principal graduate unit is the Center for Development Economics, which offers a one-year master's; Williams is not a research university with doctoral schools.
Undergraduate teaching is organized in arts and humanities, social sciences, and science and mathematics, with a seminar and tutorial culture in many departments. The Center for Development Economics, established in 1960, brings mid-career officials from developing countries to Williamstown for an M.A. in policy economics. Science facilities and the libraries serve both undergraduates and the small graduate cohort.
Enrollment is about 2,000 undergraduates plus a few dozen graduate students. International students make up around 8 to 10 percent of undergraduates; CDE fellows come from dozens of countries. Faculty number about 300. Alumni include U.S. President James A. Garfield, composer Stephen Sondheim, and AOL co-founder Steve Case.
Graduate study is the one-year M.A. at the Center for Development Economics, combining coursework in applied economics with a policy paper, on an academic-year calendar. Williamstown is a rural college town between the Taconic and Hoosac ranges. Graduate fellows live on or near campus and use the same libraries and facilities as undergraduates, far from a large city.
