About Monash University
Monash University is a public research university established by an act of the Victorian Parliament in 1958. It took its first students in 1961 and is named after General Sir John Monash. Its main campus is at Clayton, about 20 kilometers southeast of central Melbourne. It also has campuses at Caulfield, Peninsula and Parkville, and campuses abroad in Malaysia and Indonesia. It runs the IITB-Monash Research Academy in Mumbai, a joint graduate school with Southeast University in Suzhou, and a center in Prato, Italy. Monash is a member of the Group of Eight and has the largest enrollment of any Australian university.
Monash has ten faculties. They cover art, design and architecture; arts; business and economics; education; engineering; information technology; law; medicine, nursing and health sciences; pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences; and science. It is best known for pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, biomedicine and engineering. Monash researchers helped achieve Australia's first IVF pregnancy in 1980. Graduate researchers work in the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Victorian Heart Hospital, run with Monash Health. The Australian Synchrotron sits next to the Clayton campus.
Total enrollment is more than 80,000 students. More than a third are international students, from over 170 countries, and postgraduates make up a large share of the total. Alumni include former Treasurer Peter Costello and Labor minister Bill Shorten.
Most postgraduate students take coursework master's degrees, many of them in business, IT, engineering and education. Research candidates pursue the MPhil or PhD, supervised by a main supervisor and a panel. The Graduate Research Industry Partnership program places some PhD projects with industry partners. The year has two semesters, starting in late February and late July. Research students compete for Research Training Program and Monash Graduate Scholarships. Clayton is a suburban campus with its own student residences, connected to the city by train and bus.
