University of Queensland

The University of Queensland is a public research university in Brisbane, Australia, founded by the Queensland parliament in 1909, with teaching beginning in 1911. It is one of Australia's sandstone universities. The main St Lucia campus occupies about 114 hectares on a peninsula of the Brisbane River, with additional campuses at Gatton for agriculture and Herston for medicine and public health.

Academic work is grouped into faculties of science, health and behavioral sciences, engineering, architecture and information technology, business, economics and law, humanities and social sciences, and medicine. Graduate researchers use the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, the Queensland Brain Institute, the Institute for Molecular Bioscience, the Sustainable Minerals Institute, and the UQ Centre for Clinical Research, with teaching hospitals in Brisbane.

About 55,000 students are enrolled; more than a quarter are international, from more than 130 countries. Alumni include immunologist Peter Doherty, who shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, actor Geoffrey Rush, and former prime minister Kevin Rudd.

Research degrees are the MPhil and Ph.D.; taught master's degrees are common in business, engineering, public health, and education. Research students are often supported by Australian government stipend scholarships. The year runs on two semesters. St Lucia combines residential colleges with rental housing, and river ferries connect the campus to central Brisbane.
