Overview
Chemistry is the science of substances, their structures and how they react. Graduate students choose an area such as organic, inorganic, physical, analytical or materials chemistry, and much of the degree is spent designing and running experiments in a research group.
A master's can be a research degree or a professional program focused on laboratory and industrial practice. A PhD trains independent scientists and is the usual qualification for leading research in industry or academia.
Graduates become research chemists, analytical chemists, formulation scientists, quality control managers and patent specialists. Pharmaceutical, battery, materials and specialty chemical companies are major employers, and analytical and computational chemistry skills are especially valued.
Most Chemistry programs charge between $17,000 and $55,000 a year in tuition. The top ten ranked programs charge between $14,000 and $73,000.
