About Dalhousie University

Dalhousie University is a public research university in Halifax, Nova Scotia, founded in 1818 by George Ramsay, ninth Earl of Dalhousie. It grew from a small college into a multi-campus university with the Studley, Carleton and Sexton sites in Halifax and an agricultural campus in Truro. It combines arts and science with professional faculties in medicine, dentistry, law, engineering and agriculture.

Academic work is organized through more than a dozen faculties, including Medicine, Dentistry, the Schulich School of Law, Engineering, Science, Management, Health and Agriculture. Graduate students concentrate in ocean sciences, marine biology, health and law. The Ocean Frontier Institute and nearby federal marine laboratories support oceanography and climate research; clinical training uses Halifax hospitals.

The university enrolls about 21,000 students, including several thousand graduate students, with international students around a quarter of the total from more than 100 countries. Arthur B. McDonald, a Dalhousie undergraduate, later shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics. Alumni include actor Donald Sutherland and politician Peter MacKay.

Graduate degrees include research master's and PhDs, course-based master's, and professional degrees in medicine, dentistry and law. Sciences use thesis supervision; professional programs mix coursework and clinics. The year runs September to April. Funding includes university scholarships, tri-council awards and assistantships. Graduate life sits on a peninsula campus in a small coastal city, with marine labs on the harbor.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Dalhousie University lists 21 graduate programs across 15 subjects: 15 master's programs and 6 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in computer science, biology and statistics. Dalhousie University holds rank 239 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
