Lakehead University

Lakehead University is a public university in Thunder Bay, Ontario, with a second campus in Orillia. It opened in 1965, succeeding the Lakehead Technical Institute (1946) and Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology. It is a smaller regional university with a northern and natural-resources mission, including teaching and research with Indigenous communities in the boreal region.

Faculties include Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Health and Behavioural Sciences, Natural Resources Management, Science and Environmental Studies, and Social Sciences and Humanities. Natural resources management and engineering are the fields most associated with Thunder Bay. Lakehead was a founding partner in medical education for Northern Ontario. Research groups work on forestry, water, and rural health.

Lakehead enrolls about 8,000 students, with a few thousand at Orillia and a modest graduate cohort in science, education, engineering, and health. International students are a visible share of enrollment, from several dozen countries. Faculty number a few hundred. Alumni work mainly in Ontario education, forestry, engineering, and public service in the northwest of the province.

Graduate study is mainly course-based and research master's degrees, with a smaller set of doctoral programs in selected fields. Supervision is close in small departments. The calendar is a Canadian fall and winter term year. Funding comes from provincial awards and assistantships. Thunder Bay is a northern city on Lake Superior; Orillia offers a smaller central-Ontario campus.
