About Queen's University

Queen's University is a public research university in Kingston, Ontario. It was established by royal charter in 1841 as a Presbyterian college and grew into a comprehensive university while remaining a mid-sized residential campus on Lake Ontario. Scottish collegiate habits, including a strong residence system and a faculty structure, still shape how the campus is organized.

Faculties and schools include Arts and Science, Engineering and Applied Science, Health Sciences (medicine, nursing, and rehabilitation), Law, Education, the Smith School of Business, and Policy Studies, with graduate work coordinated through the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs. Strengths include engineering, business, medicine, public policy, and the physical sciences. Neutrino physics associated with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory has been a defining research program led from Queen's.

Enrollment is about 28,000 students, including several thousand graduate and professional students. International students make up more than 10 percent of enrollment. Faculty number about 1,000. Physicist Arthur B. McDonald led the neutrino observatory work from the faculty; alumni include engineer Elon Musk, who studied there before transferring, and musician Gord Downie.

Graduate degrees include the M.A., M.Sc., M.B.A., professional master's, M.D., and Ph.D. Doctoral work is supervision-led; many master's programs combine coursework with a research paper or thesis. The calendar is two semesters. Kingston is a small city, so graduate students live near campus, the waterfront, and the teaching hospitals rather than in a large metropolitan region.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Queen's University lists 23 graduate programs across 17 subjects: 19 master's programs and 3 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in finance & financial economics, biology and computer science. Queen's University holds rank 163 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
