About University of Guelph
The University of Guelph is a public university in Guelph, Ontario, about 90 kilometers west of Toronto. It was created in 1964 by combining the Ontario Agricultural College (1874), the Ontario Veterinary College (1862) and the Macdonald Institute (1903). That agricultural and veterinary inheritance still defines the institution, even as it added arts, sciences, engineering and business. The main campus is a mix of historic stone halls and modern labs in a mid-size city.
Academic units include the Ontario Agricultural College, the Ontario Veterinary College, the College of Biological Science, the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, the College of Arts and the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics. Graduate students use agri-food research stations, veterinary teaching hospitals and One Health labs. The university is known for veterinary medicine, agriculture, food science, environmental science and biology.
Enrollment is about 30,000 students when the Guelph-Humber partnership is included, with several thousand in graduate and veterinary programs. International students are a growing share, especially in science master's programs, and come from many countries. Alumni work in Canadian agri-food, veterinary practice, government and environmental agencies. Faculty number about 800 on the home campus, with a large cohort of veterinary clinicians.
Graduate degrees include MSc and PhD programs, the Doctor of Veterinary Science, professional master's degrees and an MBA. Veterinary and science doctorates are research- and clinic-based under a supervisor; many master's degrees combine courses with a thesis. The calendar is semester-based. Funding for thesis students commonly includes stipends from grants and teaching assistantships. Guelph is a compact campus town; Toronto is reachable by rail for archives, internships and city life.
