About University of Windsor

The University of Windsor is a public university in Windsor, Ontario, on the Detroit River opposite Detroit, Michigan. It began in 1857 as Assumption College, a Catholic liberal arts college, and became a secular provincial university in 1963. Its defining facts are a mid-sized comprehensive campus on Canada’s southern border and long-standing ties to the automotive industry and to cross-border legal education.

Faculties include arts, humanities and social sciences, science, engineering, the Odette School of Business, law, education, nursing, and human kinetics, plus a Faculty of Graduate Studies. Graduate strengths include automotive and mechanical engineering, environmental science, and law, notably the Canadian-American dual J.D. offered with a U.S. partner school. Engineering laboratories and the law faculty’s border-focused programs are the units graduate applicants most often cite.

Enrollment is about 16,000 students, with several thousand in graduate and professional programs and a large international share, often more than 20 percent, including many students from China, India, and the Middle East as well as the United States. Faculty number in the hundreds. Alumni work in the auto sector, Canadian and Ontario public service, and law on both sides of the border.

Graduate degrees include MA, MSc, MEng, MBA, PhD, and the J.D., with the dual J.D. as a distinctive professional path. Science and engineering doctorates are supervisor- and laboratory-based; professional programs are coursework-heavy. The year follows Canadian fall and winter semesters, with optional summer terms. Funding includes teaching and research assistantships and Ontario graduate scholarships. Students live in riverside halls or rentals in Windsor, a mid-sized industrial city with a land border crossing into Detroit.
