About Goldsmiths University of London

Goldsmiths, University of London is a public university in New Cross, South East London, founded in 1891 as the Goldsmiths' Technical and Recreative Institute and brought into the University of London in 1904. It remained a specialist college of the federal university, focused on the arts, humanities, social sciences, and computing, rather than medicine or a full science and engineering roster. The campus occupies a former naval-school site around a single quadrangle.

Departments are known for fine art, design, music, theatre, media and communications, sociology, anthropology, psychology, politics, and computing. The art department is associated with the generation later labeled the Young British Artists. Graduate research also sits in cultural studies, educational studies, and creative computing. There is no teaching hospital or land-grant extension system.

About 10,000 students enroll, with a high share of taught postgraduates and a strong international presence from more than 100 countries. The faculty is relatively small. Alumni include artists Damien Hirst and Antony Gormley and fashion designer Mary Quant.

Graduate awards are mainly one-year taught M.A. degrees, M.F.A. and M.Res. routes, and M.Phil./Ph.D. research degrees of the University of London. Teaching is seminar-, studio-, and practice-based. Terms follow the U.K. academic year. Studentships exist for doctoral work; taught master's funding is limited. New Cross is a dense inner-London neighborhood on the Overground, with central London a short train ride away.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Goldsmiths University of London lists 27 graduate programs across 9 subjects: 23 master's programs and 4 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in communication, media & journalism, environmental design and film & filmmaking.
