Explore 200+ Art graduate programs at 100+ universities across 6 countries.
Overview
Art programs at graduate level cover both making art and studying it. Studio programs develop your practice in painting, sculpture, photography, new media or performance through critique, while art history programs investigate artworks, artists and visual culture in their historical context.
The MFA is the main studio master's and is widely treated as the terminal degree for artists. Master's and PhD programs in art history focus on research, languages and writing.
Studio graduates build careers as practicing artists, university art instructors, designers and creative directors. Art historians work as museum curators, gallery and auction house specialists, archivists and academics. Many artists combine their practice with teaching, and museum and gallery roles are competitive.
Most Art programs charge between $18,000 and $60,000 a year in tuition. The top ten ranked programs charge between $25,000 and $73,000.
