About Loughborough University

Loughborough University is a public research university in Loughborough, Leicestershire, in the English East Midlands. It began in 1909 as Loughborough Technical Institute and received a university charter in 1966, keeping an applied and technical character. Nearly all teaching occupies a single parkland campus of about 440 acres on the edge of town. A second site, Loughborough University London, opened at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for postgraduate work.

The university is known for sport and exercise science, mechanical and aeronautical engineering, materials, design, and business. Graduate students use the Sports Technology Institute, extensive indoor and outdoor training venues, and engineering laboratories. Loughborough University London concentrates master's and research work in diplomacy, design, business, and media. Schools of architecture, building and civil engineering, and science round out a structure aimed at applied research and industry collaboration.

Enrollment is about 18,000 to 19,000 students, with a high postgraduate share on the London campus and a large international cohort, especially from East and South Asia. Teaching and research staff number in the low thousands. Alumni include sports administrator and former middle-distance runner Sebastian Coe, marathon runner Paula Radcliffe, and Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson.

Taught master's, research master's, and PhD degrees are the main graduate routes, with a coursework-plus-project model in engineering, sport, and business. Doctoral training often sits in EPSRC and other UK partnerships, and scholarships and studentships are the usual funding path. The Leicestershire campus is self-contained, with housing, labs, and sports venues within walking distance; London students work in Stratford beside the former Olympic facilities.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Loughborough University lists 238 graduate programs across 36 subjects: 133 master's programs and 104 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in communication, media & journalism, architecture and sport management.
