About University of Glasgow

The University of Glasgow is a public ancient university in Glasgow, Scotland. It was founded by papal bull in 1451, the second university in Scotland and the fourth in the English-speaking world. It is organized into four colleges rather than a tutorial collegiate system of the Oxford type. Its main Gilmorehill campus sits in the city's West End, with additional sites for medicine, veterinary medicine, and the Crichton campus in Dumfries.

The four colleges are Arts; Social Sciences; Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences; and Science and Engineering. Graduate students use the Hunterian Museum and art gallery, teaching hospitals, a veterinary school, and laboratories in physics, engineering, and life science. Economics, Scottish history, law, and translational medicine are long-standing strengths. The university has historic ties to economist Adam Smith, engineer James Watt, and physicist Lord Kelvin, who held a Glasgow chair.

Enrollment is about 35,000 students, with international students making up more than a third of the total and coming from more than 140 countries. Academic staff number several thousand. Seven Nobel laureates are associated with the university. Alumni include economist Adam Smith, inventor James Watt, and physicist William Thomson, Lord Kelvin.

Graduate study is offered through taught master's degrees, MLitt, MPhil, MRes, and PhD routes, with professional doctorates in some clinical fields. Research degrees are supervision-led. The Scottish academic year runs in two semesters. Funding typically comes from UK research councils, university scholarships, and Scottish doctoral training centres. Students work in a dense West End campus beside parks, museums, and the River Kelvin, with the city centre a short underground ride away.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Glasgow lists 222 graduate programs across 45 subjects: 199 master's programs and 22 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in finance & financial economics, biology and education.
