About University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham is a public research university in Nottingham, England. University College Nottingham opened in 1881 and received a royal charter in 1948. University Park is a landscaped campus west of the city; Jubilee Campus and Sutton Bonington, for biosciences and veterinary medicine, sit nearby. Campuses in Ningbo, China, and Semenyih, Malaysia, extend the same faculty structure abroad. It is a comprehensive civic university rather than a collegiate one.

Faculties cover arts, engineering, medicine and health sciences, science, and social sciences. Graduate work is established in pharmacy, veterinary medicine, engineering, English, and education. Research students use University Park laboratories, Queen's Medical Centre and other National Health Service partners, and specialist facilities at Sutton Bonington.

Enrollment at the Nottingham sites is on the order of 35,000, with a large international minority from more than 150 countries and a substantial taught-postgraduate population. Sir Peter Mansfield carried out Nobel-winning work on magnetic resonance imaging on campus. Alumni include novelist D.H. Lawrence, who studied at the university college, and economist Clive Granger.

Graduate degrees include taught master's, research master's, and the Ph.D. Research students work under a principal supervisor toward a thesis; taught programs are modular and often one year full time. The year follows the English autumn-to-summer pattern. Doctoral funding includes research-council and university studentships; many master's students are self-funded. Students live in halls on University Park or in the Lenton and Beeston neighborhoods.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Nottingham lists 81 graduate programs across 44 subjects: 75 master's programs and 6 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in business & management, economics and biology. University of Nottingham holds rank 121 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
