University of Reading

The University of Reading is a public research university in Reading, Berkshire, England. It began in 1892 as a university extension college of Oxford and received its royal charter in 1926. It is a civic campus university, with its main Whiteknights Park site of about 130 hectares south of the town center and a second site at London Road. A branch campus in Malaysia extends some taught provision overseas.

Teaching is grouped in schools that include Henley Business School, the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development, the Department of Meteorology, and faculties covering arts, humanities, science, and life sciences. Graduate work concentrates in meteorology and climate science, real estate and finance at Henley, food science, and agriculture. Research units include meteorological laboratories and farm and food facilities.

About 19,000 students study at Reading, with a substantial graduate minority and more than a quarter of students from outside the United Kingdom, drawn from well over 100 countries. Academic staff number in the low thousands. Alumni and long-serving faculty are visible in meteorology, agribusiness, and British public life; Henley supplies graduates to finance and management.

Graduate degrees include taught master’s (MA, MSc, MBA) and research MPhil and PhD awards under a supervisor, with professional master’s strong in business, real estate, and education. The calendar follows English autumn-spring-summer terms. Doctoral students are typically funded by research councils, university studentships, or industry awards. Whiteknights is a parkland campus with on-site halls; Reading sits on the Great Western line about 25 minutes from central London.
