About University of Sussex

The University of Sussex is a public research university at Falmer, on the edge of Brighton and Hove in East Sussex, England. It received its royal charter in 1961 as one of the United Kingdom's new campus universities and was organized from the start by interdisciplinary schools rather than by a medieval collegiate system. The parkland campus sits between Brighton and the South Downs.

Academic work is grouped in schools of global studies, psychology, life sciences, engineering and informatics, business, education, media, and law, politics and sociology, among others. The Institute of Development Studies and the Science Policy Research Unit are the research centers most used by graduate students in development, science policy, and innovation studies. Astronomy and physics groups work from campus and national facilities.

Sussex enrolls about 20,000 students, with international students often around a third of the student body and drawn from more than 100 countries. Faculty include chemists and social scientists; Nobel laureate Harry Kroto was a long-serving member of the chemistry faculty. Alumni include novelist Ian McEwan and former South African president Thabo Mbeki.

Graduate degrees include the MA, MSc, MPhil, and PhD, plus professional doctorates in education. Many master's programs are one-year taught courses; doctorates are research degrees under a supervisor. Teaching follows the UK autumn-to-spring pattern. Doctoral funding is competitive and often tied to UK research councils. Graduate students typically live in Brighton or on the Falmer campus and travel by train or bus along the south coast.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Sussex lists 18 graduate programs across 10 subjects: 13 master's programs and 5 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in business & management, art and communication, media & journalism. University of Sussex holds rank 249 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
