City University of Hong Kong

City University of Hong Kong is a public research university in Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong. It opened in 1984 as City Polytechnic of Hong Kong and received university title in 1994. The campus is a compact high-rise precinct beside the Kowloon Tong rail interchange, a mark of its origin as an urban technical institute rather than a colonial collegiate college.

Academic organization includes colleges of business, liberal arts and social sciences, science, and engineering, together with schools of law, data science, energy and environment, and creative media, and a veterinary medicine college run with Cornell University. Graduate students use campus laboratories, including Hong Kong government-supported state key laboratories. Strengths include business analytics, engineering, communication, energy, and veterinary science.

Enrollment is about 20,000, with a large taught-postgraduate population, a smaller research-degree cohort, and a high share of students and faculty from outside Hong Kong, especially mainland China and the rest of Asia. The university is young, so globally familiar alumni names are fewer than at older Hong Kong institutions.

Graduate study offers taught master's degrees, the MPhil, and the Ph.D., plus professional programs in law and veterinary medicine. Research degrees follow a supervisor-and-thesis model; taught master's are coursework-heavy and often one year full time. The year runs in semesters with a summer term. Research students compete for Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowships and university studentships; taught master's are largely self-funded. On-campus housing is limited, so many postgraduates commute across Kowloon and the New Territories.
