About Eindhoven University of Technology
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is a public technical university in Eindhoven, in the southern Netherlands. It was founded in 1956 as the Technische Hogeschool Eindhoven to supply engineers for the region's electronics and manufacturing industry, a role still tied to Philips, ASML, and the Brainport cluster. It remains a specialist institute of technology rather than a comprehensive university.
Nine departments cover applied physics, biomedical engineering, the built environment, chemical engineering and chemistry, electrical engineering, industrial design, industrial engineering and innovation sciences, mathematics and computer science, and mechanical engineering. The university is known for electrical engineering, mechanical and automotive systems, photonics, industrial design, and applied physics. Graduate students work through the Institute for Complex Molecular Systems, the Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute, and EIRES, often with firms on the High Tech Campus.
TU/e enrolls about 13,000 students, with master's cohorts that are heavily international and students from more than 80 countries. Doctoral candidates are typically employed as researchers rather than enrolled only as students, which raises the research-staff count into the thousands. Alumni include coding theorist Kees Schouhamer Immink and former Philips chief executive Gerard Kleisterlee.
The standard graduate path is a two-year research-oriented MSc under the Bologna model, followed by a four-year PhD, with EngD (Engineering Doctorate) programs for design-oriented work in industry. Supervision is by a professorial group; master's programs combine coursework with a substantial graduation project. The year runs in two semesters of quartiles. Scholarships include Holland Scholarship and departmental awards; PhD posts are salaried. Eindhoven is a compact industrial city; graduate life sits between the campus and the High Tech Campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Eindhoven University of Technology lists 10 graduate programs across 8 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in mechanical engineering, artificial intelligence and computer science. Eindhoven University of Technology holds rank 168 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
