About KTH Royal Institute of Technology

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is Sweden's principal technical university, based in Stockholm. It was founded in 1827 as a technological institute and remains a specialized engineering school rather than a comprehensive university. The main campus lies at Valhallavagen on the city's north side, with additional sites at Kista, Flemingsberg, and Solna.

Five schools cover architecture and the built environment; electrical engineering and computer science; engineering sciences; chemistry, biotechnology, and health; and industrial engineering and management. Graduate work concentrates in electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical and materials engineering, energy systems, and biotechnology. Research environments include the Kista information-technology cluster and laboratories in transport, fusion, and life-science engineering.

KTH enrolls about 13,000 students, with a large master's population and about 1,700 doctoral candidates. A high share of master's and doctoral students come from outside Sweden, from Europe, Asia, and elsewhere. Faculty and researchers number in the thousands. Alumni include physicist and Nobel laureate Gustaf Dalen and inventor Baltzar von Platen.

Graduate study is organized around two-year master's degrees taught largely in English and around doctoral programs in which candidates are typically employed as doctoral students. Supervision is project-based inside research groups rather than a heavy taught-course model. Stockholm supplies student housing through student foundations, and daily life is urban around the Valhallavagen campus and the Kista site.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, KTH Royal Institute of Technology lists 25 graduate programs across 14 subjects: 22 master's programs and 3 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in electrical engineering, computer science and biology. KTH Royal Institute of Technology holds rank 116 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
