About Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon University is a private research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Andrew Carnegie founded it in 1900 as the Carnegie Technical Schools, which became the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1912. It merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research in 1967. The main campus sits in the Oakland neighborhood. CMU combines a technical institute with a strong arts and business tradition.
CMU has seven colleges: the College of Engineering, the School of Computer Science, the Mellon College of Science, the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Fine Arts, the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy and the Tepper School of Business. The School of Computer Science includes the Robotics Institute, founded in 1979, the Machine Learning Department, the Language Technologies Institute and the Human-Computer Interaction Institute. The Software Engineering Institute is a federally funded research center. CMU also operates degree-granting campuses in Qatar and Kigali, Rwanda.
CMU enrolls about 16,000 students, and more than half are graduate students. International students account for a large share of graduate enrollment, with especially large groups from India and China. Twenty Nobel laureates and more than a dozen Turing Award winners have been affiliated with the university. Its alumni include Andy Warhol, John Nash and James Gosling.
CMU is known for coursework-based professional master's degrees such as the MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, Information Systems Management and Human-Computer Interaction. Many of these are completed in one to two years. Doctoral programs follow an apprenticeship model, and PhD students are generally funded through research assistantships. The university runs on semesters. Pittsburgh has a lower cost of living than most major tech hubs.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Carnegie Mellon University lists 180 graduate programs across 53 subjects: 105 master's programs and 63 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in computer science, artificial intelligence and mechanical engineering. Carnegie Mellon University holds rank 21 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
