About Clark University
Clark University is a private research university in Worcester, Massachusetts, founded in 1887 by Jonas Gilman Clark. It opened as a graduate institution on the German research model, with G. Stanley Hall as first president, and added an undergraduate college later. In 1909 Clark hosted Sigmund Freud's only public lectures in the United States, a still-cited episode in its history as a psychology center.
The university is small and organized as a college of arts and sciences with selected graduate programs rather than a full set of professional schools. It is known for psychology, geography (the Graduate School of Geography dates to 1921), international development, economics, and Holocaust and genocide studies through the Strassler Center. Other research groups work on urban ecology and human development.
About 3,200 students enroll, with roughly one-third in graduate programs. International students are a visible share of both undergraduate and graduate cohorts and come from 80 or more countries. Faculty number a few hundred. Alumni include rocket pioneer Robert H. Goddard, who completed his physics doctorate at Clark.
Graduate degrees include the M.A., M.S., a smaller M.B.A., and the Ph.D. in fields such as psychology, geography, and economics. The model is close faculty supervision and seminars on a semester calendar. Funding in doctoral programs often combines tuition fellowships and assistantships. The compact campus sits in a mid-sized New England city, with Boston about an hour away.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Clark University lists 30 graduate programs across 21 subjects: 14 master's programs and 10 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in psychology, accounting and biology.
