About Colorado State University

Colorado State University is a public land-grant research university in Fort Collins, Colorado. It opened in 1870 as Colorado Agricultural College and later took its present name. The campus lies along the Front Range, and the university still joins agriculture, veterinary medicine, engineering, and natural resources with a full set of arts and sciences colleges.

CSU is organized into colleges that include Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, the Warner College of Natural Resources, the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Natural Sciences, Liberal Arts, Health and Human Sciences, and Business. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital and laboratories in atmospheric science and infectious disease are central for graduate researchers.

Enrollment is about 33,000 students, with several thousand in graduate and professional programs, including the DVM. International students are a smaller share than at many coastal research universities. Faculty number about 1,500. Alumni include astronaut Mary Cleave and former US senator Wayne Allard, with others in veterinary practice, agriculture, and atmospheric science.

Graduate degrees include the MS, PhD, DVM, and professional master's. Veterinary and biomedical training is clinic- and lab-based; other fields follow US coursework-plus-thesis or dissertation models on a semester calendar. Assistantships and federal training grants are common in the agricultural and biomedical colleges. Fort Collins is a mid-size college city, and most graduate students live off campus near the main grounds.
