About Drexel University
Drexel University is a private research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Anthony J. Drexel founded it in 1891 as the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry; it became a university in 1970. Its defining structure is a cooperative-education model in which many students, including some at master's level, alternate academic terms with paid professional placements. The main campus sits in University City, with additional sites in Center City.
Colleges include engineering, the LeBow College of Business, computing and informatics, nursing and health professions, arts and sciences, media arts and design, the Kline School of Law, and the Drexel University College of Medicine, formed after the university absorbed MCP Hahnemann. Graduate students also work with hospitals in the city and with research groups in nanomaterials, biomedical engineering, and public health.
About 22,000 students enroll on campus and in professional programs, with graduate and professional students making up a large share, often around a third or more. International enrollment is substantial in engineering, business, and computing. Faculty number about 2,000 including clinical titles. Alumni include astronaut Christopher Ferguson and business executive Raj Gupta.
Graduate degrees include the M.S., M.B.A., J.D., M.D., and Ph.D. The academic calendar is built on quarters, which shortens terms and aligns with co-op cycles. Many master's students use co-op or industry projects; doctoral students follow a supervised research model with assistantships common in STEM. Graduate life is urban: University City, Center City hospitals, and the Philadelphia rail network.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Drexel University lists 161 graduate programs across 39 subjects: 102 master's programs and 49 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in health & medical sciences, biology and public health.
