About Johns Hopkins University
Johns Hopkins University is a private research university based in Baltimore, Maryland. It was founded in 1876 with a bequest from the merchant Johns Hopkins. It was the first American university built around the German model of graduate research and doctoral training. Its approach shaped graduate education across the United States and set the template for the modern academic medical center.
The university has nine academic divisions: the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the Whiting School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, the Carey Business School, the School of Advanced International Studies, the School of Education and the Peabody Institute. The Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland is a major division for defense and space research. The Johns Hopkins Hospital is on the East Baltimore medical campus. Hopkins has led US universities in research spending for decades, with more than US$3 billion a year.
Johns Hopkins enrolls more than 30,000 students, and graduate students, many of them part-time, make up a large majority. Students come from well over 100 countries. More than two dozen Nobel laureates have been affiliated with the university. Its alumni include Woodrow Wilson, Rachel Carson and Michael Bloomberg.
Hopkins is known for doctoral training in biomedical science and public health, and for professional master's degrees such as the MPH, the SAIS MA and engineering master's programs. Many of these are offered part-time, online or in Washington, DC. PhD students typically receive full funding. The university runs on semesters. Students work at Homewood, East Baltimore, the Washington DC Bloomberg Center, and SAIS sites in Bologna and Nanjing.
