About SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry
The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry is a public specialist college in Syracuse, New York, founded in 1911 to train foresters and environmental scientists for the state. It has kept a single-mission structure rather than adding a full set of arts and professional schools, and its main campus sits beside Syracuse University. Additional sites include the Ranger School in Wanakena and field properties in the Adirondacks and the Thousand Islands.
Teaching and research concentrate on environmental biology, forest and natural resources management, landscape architecture, environmental science, chemistry, paper and bioprocess engineering, sustainable construction, and wildlife. Graduate students work in Baker Laboratory and at forest and aquatic field stations. Shared library access and some course arrangements with Syracuse University extend the facilities of a small specialist campus.
The college enrolls about 2,000 students, including several hundred graduate students. International enrollment is modest. Faculty are concentrated in environmental and forest disciplines. Alumni typically enter public conservation agencies, the U.S. Forest Service, and environmental consulting; the college does not have a long list of widely known public figures.
Graduate degrees include the M.S., Master of Professional Studies, Master of Landscape Architecture, and Ph.D., with field seasons and laboratory supervision rather than a large professional-school curriculum. The calendar follows the semester system. Support commonly takes the form of research and teaching assistantships tied to grants. Students live in Syracuse and move between the ESF quadrangle and the neighboring Syracuse University campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry lists 102 graduate programs across 12 subjects: 75 master's programs and 27 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in environment, climate & sustainability, biology and agriculture, food & forestry.
