About Stony Brook University–SUNY

Stony Brook University is a public research university in the State University of New York system, at Stony Brook on the north shore of Long Island. It was founded in 1957 and moved to its present campus in 1962, growing into one of SUNY's two main research centers. The campus covers about 1,400 acres about 60 miles east of Manhattan. Its defining fact is a science-heavy flagship built alongside a university hospital rather than a colonial college lineage.

Graduate strengths include physics, mathematics, astronomy, computer science, and the biomedical sciences. The C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics sit on campus. The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences works from Stony Brook and Southampton. Many physical-science students collaborate with Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Renaissance School of Medicine and Stony Brook University Hospital anchor clinical and biomedical Ph.D. and M.D. training.

Enrollment is about 26,000, including roughly 8,000 graduate and professional students. International students are a large share of STEM graduate programs and come from more than 100 countries. Physicist Chen-Ning Yang long served on the faculty. Alumni include Macintosh interface designer Jef Raskin and a range of scientists placed at national laboratories.

Degrees include the M.A., M.S., M.D., and Ph.D. Research students work under a thesis adviser, often in a laboratory group that spans campus and Brookhaven, on a semester calendar. Assistantships and training grants are standard in the sciences. Stony Brook is a suburban campus town; graduate life depends on campus housing, the LIRR into New York City, and hospital shift patterns for medical students.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Stony Brook University–SUNY lists 144 graduate programs across 37 subjects: 73 master's programs and 57 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in biology, education and health & medical sciences. Stony Brook University–SUNY holds rank 266 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
