About Temple University
Temple University is a public state-related research university in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Baptist minister Russell Conwell founded it in 1884 as a night school for working students; it became Temple University in 1907. The main campus occupies North Philadelphia, with additional sites in Ambler and a health-science campus, plus long-running programs in Rome and Japan. Its defining fact is a large urban university organized around professional schools.
Seventeen schools and colleges include the Fox School of Business, Klein College of Media and Communication, Boyer College of Music and Dance, Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Beasley School of Law, Lewis Katz School of Medicine, and colleges of engineering, science, public health, education, pharmacy and dentistry. Clinical graduate students train at Temple University Hospital and related sites. Strengths include professional education, media, music, medicine and urban social science.
Enrollment is about 30,000 students, with a large graduate and professional population in law, medicine, business and the arts. International students are a visible share of some master's cohorts and come from many countries. Alumni include journalist Tamron Hall, musician Diplo and graduates across Philadelphia's courts, hospitals and newsrooms. Faculty number in the thousands when clinical and adjunct staff are counted.
Graduate study spans research master's and PhDs, the MBA, JD, MD, PharmD, DDS and professional master's in media, music and public health. Research degrees are supervisor-led; professional degrees follow coursework and clinical or studio sequences on a semester calendar.
