About University of Illinois at Chicago

The University of Illinois Chicago is a public research university in Chicago. It took its present form in 1982 when the University of Illinois merged its Chicago Circle campus, opened in 1965, with the university's medical center, whose colleges of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy date to the nineteenth century. It is the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois system and an urban institution built around health sciences and professional schools.

Sixteen colleges include medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, applied health sciences, public health, engineering, liberal arts and sciences, business, social work, education, and urban planning and public affairs. Graduate students concentrate in the health sciences, engineering, and urban and social research. UI Health and the hospitals and clinics of the Illinois Medical District are the main clinical and laboratory settings.

Enrollment is about 33,000 students, with a large graduate and professional share because of medicine and the other health colleges. International students make up a little more than 10 percent of enrollment. The College of Medicine is among the largest in the United States by student numbers. Alumni include U.S. senator Carol Moseley Braun and Chicago politician Jesus Garcia.

Graduate degrees include the M.S., Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., Pharm.D., and other professional doctorates, with clinical rotations and laboratory supervision as the core of health-science training. The calendar is a conventional semester. The campus sits on the Near West Side, so graduate life is city life: public transit, the medical district, and downtown Chicago are immediate.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Illinois at Chicago lists 24 graduate programs across 16 subjects: 8 master's programs and 16 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in biology, computer science and accounting.
