About University of Pittsburgh
The University of Pittsburgh is a public state-related research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, founded in 1787 as Pittsburgh Academy and named a university in 1908. It is the center of a multi-campus system, with the main campus in the Oakland neighborhood. The Cathedral of Learning, a 42-story Gothic Revival tower, is the academic landmark. Affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center defines much of its graduate health research.

UPMC hospitals and the Learning Research and Development Center are the main settings outside departmental laboratories.
About 35,000 students enroll across Pitt campuses, most of them in Oakland, with several thousand in graduate and professional programs and students from more than 100 countries. Alumni include television host Fred Rogers, dancer and actor Gene Kelly, and novelist Michael Chabon.
Pitt awards MA, MS, MBA, MPH, JD, MD, PharmD, PhD and other professional doctorates. Medical and health students train in UPMC hospitals; other PhDs follow a coursework-plus-dissertation model. The calendar is semester-based. Teaching and research assistantships and NIH-linked training grants support many doctoral students.
