About University of South Carolina
The University of South Carolina is South Carolina's flagship public research university, based in Columbia. Chartered in 1801 as South Carolina College, it reopened after the Civil War and took its present name later in the nineteenth century. It heads a statewide system of regional campuses and Palmetto College. The Columbia campus grew around the historic Horseshoe of original college buildings into a large urban research site.
Graduate work runs through Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Computing, Information and Communications, Education, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, and the Arnold School of Public Health, plus the Darla Moore School of Business and Schools of Medicine in Columbia and Greenville. The Moore School is identified with international business. Law, the Honors College, and research units in public health, energy, and the environment sit alongside those schools.
The Columbia campus enrolls about 35,000 students, including several thousand graduate and professional students. International students are a modest share of enrollment and come from more than 100 countries. Faculty number in the thousands. Alumni include NASA administrator Charles Bolden, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, and financier Darla Moore, whose name is on the business school.
Doctoral, professional, and research master's degrees are the main graduate routes, combining laboratory or clinical supervision with coursework in the professional schools. The calendar is a standard U.S. semester year. Doctoral students are typically supported by assistantships and fellowships. Graduate life is concentrated on the Columbia campus and in the adjacent districts of a mid-sized state capital.
