About University of Texas–Dallas

The University of Texas at Dallas is a public research university in Richardson, Texas, in the northern Dallas suburb known as the Telecom Corridor. It began as the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies, a private research institute founded in 1961 by Texas Instruments scientists, and joined the University of Texas System in 1969. What started as a small, graduate-focused campus has become a comprehensive university while keeping a scientific and engineering core.

Academic work is grouped in schools that include the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science, the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Naveen Jindal School of Management, and units in behavioral and brain sciences, arts and humanities, and economic, political and policy sciences. The Callier Center for Communication Disorders and campus research in semiconductors, computing, and neuroscience are the sites most used by graduate students.

Enrollment is about 31,000 students, with a large graduate population in engineering, computer science, and management. International students, many from Asia, make up a high share of STEM master's and doctoral cohorts. Tenure-line faculty number in the hundreds. Alumni are concentrated in the Dallas–Fort Worth technology, telecom, and corporate sectors.

Graduate degrees include the MS, MBA, and PhD, with a mix of coursework and thesis or dissertation research. Engineering and science doctorates follow a US advisor-and-committee model on the semester calendar. Doctoral students are often supported by teaching and research assistantships. The Richardson campus is suburban and rail-connected into Dallas, and many graduate students commute from across the metro area.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Texas–Dallas lists 19 graduate programs across 17 subjects: 6 master's programs and 12 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in computer science, data science & business analytics and finance & financial economics.
