About University of Utah

The University of Utah is Utah's public flagship, founded in Salt Lake City in 1850 as the University of Deseret and renamed in 1892. It occupies a foothill campus on the east side of the city against the Wasatch Range and has expanded into a health-sciences complex and research park. It is a comprehensive state research university with a large academic medical center.

Colleges cover mines and earth sciences, engineering, science, humanities, social and behavioral science, the David Eccles School of Business, law, education, fine arts, and health. Graduate work is especially associated with the School of Computing and the Scientific Computing and Imaging Institute, with clinical research at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Moran Eye Center, and University of Utah Hospital.

About 35,000 students enroll, including roughly 8,000 graduate and professional students. International students number in the thousands, from around 100 countries. Alumni of the computing program include Adobe co-founder John Warnock and Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull; early computer-graphics work at Utah also trained Silicon Graphics founder Jim Clark.

Graduate study includes the Ph.D., M.S. and M.A., M.B.A., J.D., M.D., and professional master's in engineering and public health. The pattern is coursework plus thesis or clinical training on a semester calendar. Assistantships and hospital fellowships are the usual STEM and medical funding. Students live in Salt Lake City or nearby, with the mountains and downtown a short trip from campus.
