About William & Mary
William & Mary is a public university in Williamsburg, Virginia, chartered in 1693 by King William III and Queen Mary II. It is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. The historic campus is organized around the Wren Building. The university combines a liberal-arts college with graduate and professional schools and operates the Virginia Institute of Marine Science as a graduate and research campus on the York River at Gloucester Point.
The main units are the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Raymond A. Mason School of Business, the School of Education, the Marshall-Wythe School of Law, where legal instruction began in 1779, and VIMS. Graduate students work in American history and public policy, marine science, business, education, and law. Research facilities include colonial-era archives in Williamsburg and marine laboratories at Gloucester Point.
About 9,500 students are enrolled, including roughly 2,500 to 3,000 in graduate and professional programs. International enrollment is modest. The faculty is small relative to large state flagships. Alumni include U.S. Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and John Tyler.
Degrees include the J.D., M.B.A. and other master's degrees, the M.Ed. and Ed.D., and M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. programs in arts, sciences, and marine science. Law and business follow professional curricula; arts and sciences doctorates are apprenticeship-style. The calendar is semester-based. Graduate students live in a restored colonial capital that is also a tourist site; Richmond and Norfolk are the nearest large employment markets.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, William & Mary lists 66 graduate programs across 18 subjects: 36 master's programs and 16 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, public policy & administration and computer science.
