About The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is a public research university at Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong, founded in 1991. It was created as an English-medium university in science, engineering, business, and the humanities rather than as a comprehensive colonial college. The hillside campus overlooks Port Shelter on the Sai Kung peninsula.

Four schools—Science, Engineering, Business and Management, and Humanities and Social Science—plus interdisciplinary programs structure teaching. Graduate students use the HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study and institutes in nanoscience, energy, environment, and data. The business school is a major center for taught postgraduate and M.B.A. study; engineering and science dominate research degrees.

About 17,000 students enroll, with postgraduates a large share, often around 40 percent. Non-local students, including from mainland China and overseas, form a substantial part of the graduate population. Faculty number about 700. Because the university is young, notable alumni are concentrated in technology, finance, and public service in Hong Kong and the mainland rather than in a long historic list.

Graduate degrees include the MPhil, Ph.D., MSc, and M.B.A. Research students follow a supervision model with qualifying requirements; taught master's are coursework-heavy. The academic year is semester-based. Ph.D. students are typically funded by studentships. Graduate housing is on the Clear Water Bay campus, a self-contained site some distance from central Hong Kong.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology lists 98 graduate programs across 34 subjects: 58 master's programs and 39 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in finance & financial economics, biology and business & management. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology holds rank 60 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
