About University of Groningen
The University of Groningen is a public research university in Groningen, in the northern Netherlands, founded in 1614 by the Regional Assembly of Stad en Lande. It is one of the Dutch classical universities and still splits the humanities in the inner city from the science and engineering buildings at the Zernike complex north of the center.
Faculties include Arts, Law, Medical Sciences with the University Medical Center Groningen, Science and Engineering, Economics and Business, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Spatial Sciences, Theology and Religious Studies, Philosophy, and University College Groningen. Chemistry, medicine, astronomy, and spatial sciences are long-standing strengths. University Medical Center Groningen is the main teaching hospital and biomedical research site.
About 37,000 students are enrolled; more than 20 percent are international, from more than 120 countries, with a higher share in English-taught master's programs. Chemist Ben Feringa, Nobel laureate in 2016 for work on molecular machines, is a professor here. Physicist Frits Zernike, who received the Nobel Prize for phase-contrast microscopy, taught at Groningen. Alumna Aletta Jacobs was the first woman admitted to a Dutch university.
Graduate study follows the Bologna model: one- or two-year master's degrees, including research master's, and a Ph.D. undertaken as a paid doctoral researcher. English is the working language in many master's and doctoral programs. The city is compact and cycling-based, and students form a large share of its population of about 230,000.
