About Binghamton University–SUNY

Binghamton University is a public research university of the State University of New York. Its main campus is in Vestal, next to Binghamton in New York's Southern Tier. It opened in 1946 as Triple Cities College of Syracuse University, became Harpur College in 1950, and was named a SUNY university center in 1965. A liberal-arts college remains the core, with professional and doctoral schools added around it.

Graduate study is organized through Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, the Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Management, the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the College of Community and Public Affairs, and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Materials science, systems science, psychology, nursing, and pharmacy are the fields that most often draw graduate students. The Center for Advanced Microelectronics Manufacturing and the Evolutionary Studies Program are among the research units that support that work.

Enrollment is about 18,000, including roughly 4,000 graduate and professional students. International students make up about 10 percent of the student body and come from more than 70 countries. The full-time faculty numbers about 600. Alumni are concentrated in engineering, health, and New York public life; among them are actor William Baldwin and comedian Paul Reiser.

The Graduate School awards MA, MS, MBA, PhD, DNP, and PharmD degrees. Doctoral programs combine coursework with faculty-supervised research on a semester calendar. Research students are usually supported by assistantships; professional programs rely more on school scholarships. Graduate life is campus-centered on the wooded Vestal hillside, with clinical sites and internships in Binghamton, Johnson City, and Endicott.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Binghamton University–SUNY lists 133 graduate programs across 35 subjects: 84 master's programs and 42 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, literature and mechanical engineering.
