About Clemson University

Clemson University is South Carolina's public land-grant research university, located in Clemson in the Upstate. It was founded in 1889 under the will of Thomas Green Clemson as Clemson Agricultural College and became Clemson University in 1964. Its structure is still the land-grant mix of agriculture, engineering, and a residential campus beside Lake Hartwell in the Blue Ridge foothills.

Graduate programs sit in the colleges of agriculture, forestry and life sciences; architecture, art and construction; behavioral, social and health sciences; business; education; engineering, computing and applied sciences; and science. Engineering, agriculture, and computing are the fields most associated with the university. The Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research in Greenville and campus institutes in materials and advanced manufacturing serve doctoral and professional students.

Enrollment is about 27,000, with roughly 5,000 to 6,000 graduate students. International students, many of them in engineering, come from more than 80 countries. Alumni include architect and former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt, long-serving U.S. senator Strom Thurmond, and a large body of South Carolina engineers and teachers.

The Graduate School awards MS, MA, MBA, and PhD degrees across those colleges. Doctoral study is research-supervised, and many engineering students work on industry-linked projects. The calendar is the semester. Assistantships and fellowships fund most research students. Campus life is concentrated in the college town of Clemson, with Greenville as the nearest city for laboratories and internships.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Clemson University lists 111 graduate programs across 38 subjects: 66 master's programs and 44 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, biology and agriculture, food & forestry.
