About Dartmouth College
Dartmouth College is a private research university in Hanover, New Hampshire, on the Connecticut River. Eleazar Wheelock founded it in 1769 under a royal charter, which makes it the ninth-oldest college in the United States and one of the nine colonial colleges. The Supreme Court's 1819 decision in Trustees of Dartmouth College v. Woodward, argued by alumnus Daniel Webster, protected private charters from state takeover. Dartmouth is a member of the Ivy League. It kept the name "College" even though it runs doctoral and professional schools.
Dartmouth has a Faculty of Arts and Sciences and four graduate and professional schools. The Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies runs the PhD and arts and sciences master's programs. The Geisel School of Medicine was founded in 1797. Thayer School of Engineering dates to 1867, and the Tuck School of Business, founded in 1900, was the first graduate school of management in the country. The term "artificial intelligence" was coined for the 1956 Dartmouth summer workshop, and the BASIC programming language was created at Dartmouth in 1964. Graduate students in health fields work with Dartmouth Health's medical center in nearby Lebanon, the Dartmouth Cancer Center, and The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, which produces the Dartmouth Atlas.
Dartmouth enrolls about 6,700 students, and roughly a third of them are in graduate and professional programs. International students make up a larger share of the graduate schools than of the college. Its alumni include the writer Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), the Nobel laureate in medicine George Snell, and Vice President Nelson Rockefeller.
Graduate cohorts are small, and doctoral students work closely with faculty advisers across departments. PhD students generally receive full funding with a stipend. Dartmouth also offers the MD, the MBA, the Master of Engineering Management, the MPH and health care delivery science degrees. The year runs on the D-Plan, four ten-week terms. Hanover is a rural town with outdoor access to the White Mountains and the Appalachian Trail.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Dartmouth College lists 50 graduate programs across 19 subjects: 19 master's programs and 22 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in biology, public health and biomedical engineering. Dartmouth College holds rank 47 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
