About Georgia Institute of Technology
The Georgia Institute of Technology is a public research university in Midtown Atlanta and part of the University System of Georgia. It was chartered in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology and opened in 1888, as part of the state's push to build an industrial economy after Reconstruction. Its main campus covers about 400 acres and housed the Olympic Village for the 1996 Atlanta Games. It has also operated Georgia Tech-Lorraine in Metz, France, since 1990.
Georgia Tech has six colleges: Engineering, Computing, Sciences, Design, the Scheller College of Business, and the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. The College of Engineering is one of the largest in the United States, with particular strength in industrial and systems, aerospace, civil, and electrical and computer engineering. The Georgia Tech Research Institute runs large applied and defense research programs. Other units include the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines, Machine Learning at Georgia Tech, and Technology Square, where corporate innovation centers sit beside university buildings.
Total enrollment is more than 50,000 students. Graduate students outnumber undergraduates, largely because of online programs. International students make up a large share of residential graduate enrollment, especially in engineering and computing. Alumni include President Jimmy Carter, who attended before transferring to the Naval Academy, Nobel chemistry laureate Kary Mullis, and more than a dozen NASA astronauts.
Georgia Tech offers MS and PhD programs across engineering, computing and the sciences. In 2014 it launched the Online Master of Science in Computer Science with Udacity and AT&T, and later added similar online degrees in analytics and cybersecurity. Doctoral students are usually funded as graduate research or teaching assistants within faculty labs. The university runs on semesters. Students live in or near Midtown, with MARTA rail stations close to campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Georgia Institute of Technology lists 105 graduate programs across 38 subjects: 52 master's programs and 52 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in computer science, biology and biomedical engineering. Georgia Institute of Technology holds rank 33 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
